Integrating Ancient Wisdom in Modern Life: Judgement And Discretion

  1. Yoga is the technique that gives us the distinction between judgement and discretion. Conscience is the faculty of discerning the mind to consider and observe the possible consequences of our behaviour. Judging can be damaging. It’s also true that judging, the automatic labelling of something as “good” or “bad,” is often the result of a shallow understanding of a situation.
  2. Mind is the processing unit of the input brought by 5 senses called mann and the mind also accumulates memories called Chitta.
  3. 4 Qualifications of a Seeker to discriminate:  Vivek ( Discretion), Vairagya (Leaving lower and Focus on higher), Six fold Virtues (Tranquillity, Control the senses – Physical Control,Turning inward, Forbearance, Shraddha – Faith) and Mumuksha (Focus – Balance with attention).
    • Vivek: The understanding of the difference between that which is bound by time and that which is beyond time. It is disciplined thinking as without the capability of logical analysis, the understanding referred to above cannot be reached.
    • Vairagya: Dispassion is the conscious mastery of the control of desire for objects seen, perceived or heard.
    • Six fold Virtues: In order for us to qualify for Self-Realisation, we need to gather the 6 qualities: Tranquillity, Control of the Senses, Turning resolutely inwards, Forbearance, and Shraddha. That means you have to be at the point where you say to yourself, “Enough is enough is enough”. Enough of the external life, enough of seeking for pleasures in the wrong places, enough of these wanderings around, enough is enough is enough!
    • Mumuksha: Mumukha is not an inquiry. Inquiry leads to thought; Mumuksha leads to sadhana. Jigyasa (inquiry) gives rise to reflection; Mumuksha gives birth to meditation. An inquirer wanders in thoughts only. Where religion is concerned, the Mumukshu reaches the destination which is beyond the grasp of the inquirer.
  4. Person who has the ability to discretion will be able to see his/her own thoughts and memories in a detached way. Once you are detached from your thoughts you will not resist or be involved with the thoughts. At this stage you will leave lower without any effort. And your focus will be on the higher. Gestalt has changed.
  5. With the change of gestalt six fold virtues from Mental control till Focusing with attention will bring self-awareness.
  6. Once you are able to focus your mind without attachment then desire to self-realisation will become your goal.
