People who study the path today do not understand the great way – they only strive to fulfill greed and ambition. At the very outset of their inspiration to study the way, their initial understanding is already mistaken.
The path is the path of fundamental purity: for immense aeons, and even up to the present day, it has no gain or loss, no new or old, no light or dark, no form or name. It is not more in the buddhas and not less in ordinary people. To insist on calling it the way is already defiling; to say something is accomplished by methods of learning the way is what I have called mistaken. It was for lack of choice that the ancients referred to people heading for transcendence as students of the way. The study is that there is nothing to study; the way is that there is nothing to be a way. Since there is nothing to study, there is no clinging; since there is nothing to be a way, there is no following. If one idly slips and says the word Buddha, one must simply wash one’s mouth for three years – only thus can one be called a real student of the way.
Nan-ch’uan said, “The way is not the province of knowing, nor is it the province of unknowing. Knowing is false consciousness, unknowing is indifference. If you truly arrive at the way without doubt, it is like cosmic space – how can you insist on affirmation and denial?”
Be Silent
The story Fundamental Purity is telling that when you are moving inward unless you drop knowledge, knowing then only you will be able to know the Fundamental Purity, which is your own space.
In Buddhism even if you utter the word Buddha, then for three years you have to wash your mouth. What it conveys is that you need to drop Buddha also. Then only you will arrive in your cosmic space, emptiness.
We are very much enclosed in our own psychology, which includes Buddha, God, or Master and we project that psychology all around. A man of silence finds this whole world is full of silence. Even the sounds only deepen the silence. And a man full of noise never becomes aware of the immense silences in the night. It all depends on you. Your world is nothing but you, projected.
Become silent. In your silence, all questions will disappear. And the dance will begin, whatever the figure! Because as far as your inner being is concerned, it has no figure; it is just a luminous flame which can dance. It has been eternally there, repressed by you. You are the greatest enemy of yourself. My effort is to turn you into the greatest friend of yourself.
A man of silence moves with a certain field of energy around him, and if you are receptive, his vibe starts touching your heart.
In meditation, silence comes on its own accord. You simply go on watching the mind without any control, without any repression, and silence comes suddenly just like a breeze, and with the silence, the fragrance of the flowers – that is your blissfulness; it is your own fragrance which you were not capable of knowing because there was so much noise.
Truth is not something that comes from outside, it arises out of the intensity of your silence. In fact, the intensity of your silence, a great silence crystallized, is truth. Truth is not something other than silence. A small silence becomes the door to greater silences, and finally, the silence itself becomes so condensed – Gurdjieff used to call it the crystallization – you find yourself. In that very finding you have found the truth. Then life is a sheer joy, a song, a dance, a celebration.
If you really want to express the truth, don’t say anything about it, just leave the gap. Let people hear without you saying anything. That’s the only way truth has always been transferred – from one silent heart to another silent heart. In utter silence is the only possibility to meet, to merge, to share.
Silence is all that is needed, and everything else follows on its own accord.
Learning from the story Fundamental Purity: Be Silent
Experience Learning
What is silence? Normally people think of silence as absence of noise. Meditative silence is something else.
Physiological Benefits Of Silence
Scientific research shows that there are multiple health benefits attached to silence, understood as absence of noise.
1. De-stress your nervous system. Noise pollution is a modern plague. Studies show that being continuously stimulated by noise raises stress levels. Noise activates the amygdala, the part of the brain which detects danger, thus stimulating cortisol (the stress hormone). So, just being in silence has relaxing and restorative effects for the brain.
2. Increase neurogenesis. Studies on mice show that silence generates new cells in the brain, so being in a quiet environment grows your brain, and suggest that silence can have therapeutic effects on neuro-degenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
3. Rejuvenate your brain. The chronic overstimulation of modern life is a serious challenge to the brain’s capacity to cope with ceaseless information processing and attention demands. That’s why many people feel drained and chronically fatigued. Silence helps to restore this energy depletion and replenishes cognitive resources.
Meditative Silence Is Not Absence Of Noise
You can be utterly silent in the midst of a busy and noisy environment. Meditative silence has more to do with the inner world, rather than external circumstances. Even if you are in a totally quiet place and don’t talk, the inner chit-chat carries on relentlessly. Silence is, when the mind is not. So to experience silence, is to go beyond the mind.
A Glimpse Of Silence Can Change Your Life
Osho Dynamic Meditation is a method of creating a situation in which silence can happen. Ordinarily you cannot go directly into silence. Even a split second of inner silence can show you that there is something beyond the mind and inspire you to go further, all the way to enlightenment. But how to achieve that?
From Total Activity To Total Inactivity
Osho Dynamic Meditation can help you experience real silence by exploiting the connection between body and mind. Body and mind are deeply interrelated. In the third stage you are jumping with utter intensity and all of a sudden you hear STOP. And you freeze completely wherever you are. By doing so, you break the body/mind association. The body suddenly freezes and the mind is taken aback. In that fracture, a gap is created. And that gap is filled with silence. If you become aware of that gap, you will find silence, even if just for a split moment.
Let Silence Arise From Within
Osho Dynamic Meditation is a way to experience silence without imposing it onto you. Most meditation techniques, including Mindfulness, are a sort of repression. Yes, you can create an absence of noise but that is something artificial, manufactured, dead; it’s not authentic, spontaneous and alive. Silence cannot be enforced upon you, but it can arise out of utter intensity and deep catharsis. Through the extreme activity of the Osho Dynamic Meditation, you will be led to feel an inner stillness growing inside.
Real silence cannot happen by repressing inner and outer noise. It’s not enough to just not talk or remove external noise. So be as total as possible in the first three stages of this wonderful technique and let the silence happen to you, even despite of you. It’s magic and it works!
