Shifting the Mindset: From Survival to Significance

Introduction

Prof. Joy Sen opened the session by explaining that the meeting would be conducted as a series of three panels, each featuring a 9 to 10-minute presentation followed by a discussion. The session’s objective is to explore “illuminating education,” which connects research, awareness, and meditation to daily actions in professional and academic settings, viewing these activities as forms of karma yoga. The speakers introduced for the panels were Professor Dr. Madhumita Chatterji, the Director of the ABBS school of management in Bangalore; Sri Anil Kumar Pandit, an IIT Bombay alumnus with over 55 years of leadership experience; and Madame Dhwani Shah, the founder of the Dwarkadhish Holistic Centre.

Perspectives on Ethical Leadership: Lessons from Chanakya, Vidur, and Krishna Niti:

  1. Dr. Madhumita Chatterji: Channakay Niti: Chanakya’s framework for leadership rests on seven pillars: knowledge, character, talent, governance, strategy, enterprise, and stakeholder welfare. Expanding on this, she highlighted that true knowledge is measured by its societal application rather than mere information. Furthermore, integrity and transparency build trust, making ethical behavior a vital economic asset.
  2. Anil Pandit: Vidur Niti: Vidur Niti serves as a universal moral compass for every level of an organization, reinforcing the belief that true education is the “manifestation of the perfection already in human beings.” By reinterpreting a traditional CV as a dual focus on Capability and Values, this holistic approach to professional and personal growth equips individuals to drive ethical leadership – potentially addressing up to 50% of the UN Sustainable Development Goals through value-driven action.
  3. Dhwani Shah: In Krishna Niti, true potential (swabhao) isn’t acquired – it is reclaimed. As children, we inherently possess trust and decisiveness, both of which are gradually eroded by adult overthinking and self-doubt. Arjuna’s hesitation on the battlefield was never a lack of mastery – having previously defeated the entire Hastinapur army single-handedly – but a crisis of indecisiveness. Krishna’s guidance was simply an act of self-remembering, nudging Arjuna back to his core potential. Ultimately, external advantages like wealth, networks, and resources account for merely 5% of success; the remaining 95% relies entirely on unlocking the internal potential we so often ignore.
