You can’t imagine India’s loss after its textile industry was destroyed. India’s textile industry was famous for its exceptional fabrics and weaves. It was the second largest employer and contributed over 10% to India’s GDP.
However, between 1800 and 1860, the industry faced a severe decline. This was a deliberate plan by the British. They destroyed Indian looms, disrupted the market, and introduced machinery in their textile mills. They also imposed heavy taxes on Indian weavers, ruining their businesses. As a result, millions of people died suffering from hunger and poverty.
It’s shocking to think that in 1800, India’s GDP contributed 24% to the world’s GDP, but by 1947, it had shrunk to a mere 4%. This shows the extent of the destruction caused by the British. Traditional clothing, which had deep cultural and religious significance, was gradually replaced by mass-produced British textiles. Indian textiles have mentions found in the Rig Veda and have a rich legacy of craftsmanship.
