India discovered gravity centuries before Isaac Newton. In the 5th century, Paskara, in his work called Siddhanta Shiromani, mentioned that objects fall towards the Earth due to a force of attraction. He proposed that this attractive force is responsible for holding celestial bodies like the Earth, planets, constellations, moon and sun in their respective orbits.
Another Indian mathematician named Brahmagupta expressed the concept of gravity. He stated that objects fall towards the Earth because it is the nature of the Earth to attract bodies much like water flows naturally.
Approximately a century prior to Brahmagupta, an astronomer named Varahamihira made an early mention of the existence of a force that keeps bodies attached to the Earth while also governing the positions of celestial bodies.
Furthermore, Rig Veda states that the gravitational effect of the solar system plays a crucial role in keeping the Earth stable. It wasn’t until around 1200 years later after Paskara that Isaac Newton rediscovered this phenomenon and gave it the name Law of Gravity.
