Self understanding is the key to Happiness.
Understanding oneself is the beginning of a transformation, of a revolution. It is not the ego that you must understand, for that is merely a social construct, an accumulation of what others have told you and what you have told yourself.
True self-understanding comes when you peel away these layers of conditioning. To be happy, to know happiness that does not ebb and flow the tides of external circumstances, requires an acquaintance with your innermost core, your essence that is beyond the ego. That essence is a part of the whole universe – it is blissful, it is celebratory, it is what you might call divine.
When you begin to witness your emotions, your thoughts, and your sensations without identification, without saying “this is me,” you gain clarity. You start to see the patterns of your unconsciousness, the ways in which you have become mechanical, repeating the same actions, the same mistakes, expecting different results. Self-understanding gives you a choice – the choice to act consciously rather than react unconsciously.
Happiness is not something to pursue; it is what you are when you stop pursuing. When you understand yourself, when you know who you are, the pursuit ends and life becomes a play, a Leela. And in that playful state, everything is joyous, everything is light, and everything is as it should be. This is the true nature of happiness – an inner state untouched by the happenings of the outer world.
Self-understanding is not just about knowing your interests, your likes and dislikes, or your past. It is to be in touch with the life force that is alive in you at this very moment – the same life force that causes the flowers to bloom and the stars to shimmer. Realising that you are not separate from this totality is the beginning of real happiness.
