Comparison is a very foolish attitude, because each person is unique and incomparable.
Life is so rich in its play and variegation that no two leaves are exactly alike since the beginning of time. You, being part of this cosmic dance, are as unique as those leaves. Every individual is endowed with a unique set of potentials, problems, destinies, and death. When you compare yourself with another, you are comparing two phenomena that are incomparably unique.
Comparison, then, is a trap. It binds you to the superficial, to what can be measured and weighed. This attitude steers you away from your innermost being, where your true essence lies, and tosses you into the chaos of competition and imitation. In measuring yourself against another, you subject your spontaneity and creativity to the dull blade of uniformity.
You are here not to walk someone else’s path, nor to upstage or outshine others, but to flower into your unique self. To compare is to judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree – it overlooks the fish’s prowess in swirling through water, its natural element. When consumed with comparison, you tend to see only what you lack, rather than the boundless opportunities and gifts that lie within each unique individual.
Look within, see your own emptiness and fullness, and come to realise the futility of comparing the incomparable. Life is not a marketplace, it is a celebration. Remember, comparison leads to jealousy and ambition, which in turn, cloud your vision and rob you of your peace. Drop comparison and you drop the ego, and when the ego drops, you become limitless, oceanic. Relish this taste and be free.
