Patience is not about how long you can wait, but how well you behave while you are waiting.

Patience is indeed a golden key to a serene life. The quote touches on a very significant aspect of patience. It is not merely a passive waiting; it is an active state of being. True patience is characterised by the quality of your inner climate while the universe unfolds in its own time.

You see, the duration of the waiting is not what defines patience. A tree does not hasten to bear fruit after being planted; it simply basks in the sun, drinks in the rain, and allows the seasons to nurture its growth in due course. Similarly, while you are in a period of anticipation or waiting, it’s essential not to merely focus on the endpoint, but to maintain a conscious, present-moment awareness of your thoughts, reactions, and emotions.

The real test of patience comes in the form of your behaviour while you wait. How do you treat others? Are you nurturing kindness, positivity, and understanding? Or does your waiting brew frustration and leak out as unhelpful behaviours? This is the essence of the teaching.

In your own life, when faced with a situation that requires patience, practice mindfulness. Observe your feelings and thoughts without judgement. Engage in actions that align with your inner values, rather than being driven by the anxiety of unmet timelines. Cultivating a well-tempered spirit during these periods of waiting is a reflection of profound patience, and such behaviour makes patience a transformative experience rather than a gruelling test of endurance.

Remember, life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans. Patience, cultivated rightly, transforms the ‘waiting’ into a period of growth and learning. It’s what you are becoming in the wait that really matters.
