The moment you become innocent, you have found a direct line to the divine.
When Osho speaks of innocence, he is not referring to the ignorance of a child, nor to naiveté. True innocence is akin to purity of consciousness – an unclouded, unconditioned state of being. It is the absence of pretence, the absence of ego’s constructed identities and desires. It is that serene state of being where you are in harmony with existence, where the dichotomies of right and wrong, mine and thine, dissolve into the simple is-ness of life.
This innocent state is not something you achieve through accumulation – be it knowledge, wealth, or virtue – but rather through a process of subtraction. It is a peeling away of the layers of conditioning, like the shedding of old, dry skin, to reveal the fresh, vibrant aliveness underneath.
When you become innocent, you are in your natural state – you are true, you are authentic. At that moment, the divine is not something separate from you, it is not a distant concept or entity; you are the divine. It is a direct line because there is no longer an intermediary, no mantra, ritual or doctrine stands between you – only the pure experience of existence.
To expand upon this, think of this direct line to the divine like sunlight that is always shining. Clouds may obscure it, but the sun is always there, constant and unfaltering. Your ego, your conditioning, are these clouds. When you clear them, the sunlight – or, in this context, the divine – is experienced directly. You don’t need to reach for it, it envelops you naturally.
In practical terms, to apply this teaching, cultivate awareness and mindfulness in your daily life. Observe yourself, observe the ways in which ego manifests, how it creates desires, fears, conflicts, and gradually, through meditation, learn to let go of these layers. As you do this, the innocence which has always been your core begins to shine forth.
Remember, it is a journey of discovering, not of becoming. The divine is already within you.
