Some Interesting things about bells-
1. The bell is a simple yet elegant musical instrument. At its most basic, it is a hollow cup-shape of metal. When looked at closer, however, things are a little more complicated. Inside the outside shell of the bell there is a small piece of hinged hanging metal called a clapper. This swings freely within the shell of the bell.
Bell clapper is made from same material as the bell itself.
2. Great Britain has nickname of “The Ringing Isle” because of its many bells.
Largest bell ever made was Great Bell of Dhammazedi. It weighed over 300 tons when it was created, and was eventually lost under the river Burma when Portuguese conquerors tried to steal it and melt it for cannons.
3. Most bells are made of metal. In India you usually see bells made of brass. But in many places people make bells of horn, wood, glass or even clay.
They also come in various shapes. Some bells have lotus-shaped rims. Others are round, square, jar-shaped or shaped like tulip flowers.
4. People have been ringing bells from very early times.
5. History of bells started with the advancement of metallurgy in ancient china. In 2000 BC. As the centuries went on, creation of bells became and art, giving artist a chance to infuse on them various images and themes that attracted the attention for Royalty and nobility in China. Before Christianity even appeared, bells were viewed as a musical instrument of the gods.
6. The bible has many mentions of the bells, especially in the tales of Moses who studied priesthood in Egypt and carried knowledge of bells and gongs to Christianity.
7. Bells are made from many different materials and designs; bronze mixed with a certain percentage of tin, brass, and iron. The process of making bells is called Bellfounding and was perfected in Europe during the 4th and 5th Centuries.
