Watchfulness is the greatest magic one can learn.
The art of watchfulness, it is indeed the doorway to the divine, a portal to the profound depths of existence. To be watchful is to be fully present, to step back from the ceaseless stream of thoughts and simply observe. Just as a lotus grows out of the mud yet remains untouched by it, watchfulness allows you to engage with the world while remaining detached from its chaos and confusion.
When Osho says that watchfulness is the greatest magic one can learn, he is highlighting its transformative power. It is the alchemy that turns the base metal of unconsciousness into the gold of awareness. Through watchfulness, one becomes a witness to all that is – seeing thoughts, emotions, and sensations arise and pass without being caught in their current.
Imagine a mirror. It reflects everything but holds onto nothing. Similarly, in the state of watchfulness, you reflect the essence of life but do not become entangled in its myriad forms. This simple act of observation grants you freedom from the traps of the mind. It breaks the spell of identification with thought, which is the root of all suffering.
By practising watchfulness, you step into a space of choice. Instead of reacting automatically to stimuli, you choose your response. This is the magic – creating that gap between stimulus and response where your true power lies.
In the garden of your inner being, watchfulness is both the sunlight and the water nurturing the growth of your consciousness. As you cultivate this practice, the buds of insight and compassion will naturally bloom. This, in essence, is the path towards enlightenment – a journey illuminated by the light of your own watchful presence.
