    Love is our deepest longing…

Love is indeed our deepest longing – it is the essence of our very being. For centuries, poets, mystics, and philosophers have grappled with this profound emotion, this ineffable state of being. But love is not just an emotional or a mental construction; it is the fabric of existence.

We come into this world through an act of love. As infants, our very survival is dependent on love, on that unconditional, caring bond with our parents or caretakers. It’s our innate call for connection, a magnetic force that draws beings together, from the smallest particles to the largest stars.

When Osho says love is our deepest longing, he is not referring purely to romantic love, which is just one leaf on the vast tree of love. He speaks of the love that underpins all existence; the love that is synonymous with a deep, abiding connectivity with all that is. It is the longing to dissolve the superficial barriers that we create between ourselves and others, between humanity and nature, between the individual self and the universe. In this sense, love is not something we do, but something we are.

To expand on this, consider the endless search that occupies human life. All the pursuits for success, recognition, and happiness are, at their core, a search for a state where one feels entirely united with their surroundings, where the distinction between subject and object melts away. This is a state of love.

Love is a state of no-mind; it is meditative in its purest form. It is being so utterly present with the other that the ‘I’ is forgotten. It is in this forgetting of the self where true love blossoms – where one sees the other as not separate, but as an integral part of one’s own infinite nature.

You see, to long for love is to long for this union, this oneness with all. But remember, that this love, this state, while our deepest longing, is not something that can be acquired or possessed. It can only be realised or recognised within oneself, and then seen everywhere, in everyone and everything.

In the world, so much pain and turmoil stem from the misunderstanding of this longing – where people cling to the object of love rather than the state of love itself. They grasp, desire, become jealous and possessive, mistaking these emotions for love. True love, however, is the antithesis of such insecurities – it is expansive, liberating, and infinitely inclusive.

Encounter love with an open heart but remain centred in your own being. When you come from this space, then you can love deeply, truly, without losing yourself. You become a mirror reflecting an inexhaustible love, not just for another, but for the whole cosmos. Love then is not just a longing; it is an understanding, a realisation – a merging of the drop into the ocean. And in this merging, one finds the truest freedom, the deepest joy, and the completion of the human experience.
