A Witness is one who participates, yet remains alert and goes on remembering that I AM A CONSCIOUSNESS.
The quote touches the very essence of what Osho talks about: living with total awareness. To participate in life fully, to taste the myriad flavours it has to offer, and yet, to remain a witness – this is the art of conscious living.
Life is a drama, a play, and most people are completely lost in their roles, forgetting their true self. The role becomes their identity. To be a witness is to remember that you are not the role, you are not the emotion, you are not the thought – you are the one who sees, the consciousness behind all phenomena.
When Osho speaks of the witness, he is talking about a state of detached observation. Whatever you do – eating, walking, talking – do it with complete involvement, but at the same time, be alert. Watch yourself doing it, as if a part of you is participating and another part is standing back, observing. This observer is your consciousness, your true nature.
By practising this witnessing, you create a distance between your conscious self and the activities of the mind and body. This distance is freedom. It is the space where you realise that no matter what happens in the external world, you are not affected. You are like the sky; clouds of thoughts and emotions may pass through, but the sky remains untouched.
Remember, to be a witness is not to be passive. It is to bring an active alertness, an awareness to every act. This alertness brings with it a profound peace and stillness, a deep inner silence that exists even in the midst of dynamic activity.
Live life fully, yet remain untouched by its highs and lows – like a lotus leaf which, though in water, water cannot touch. This is the path to understanding your own eternity, to touching the divine within you.
Carry this awareness into your daily life and you will see a transformation. You become more sensitive, more alive, yet at the same time, centred and calm. You become a beautiful paradox: totally involved, yet absolutely detached, wonderfully engaged with life, yet at the same time, completely at peace and free.
Continue this practice, and you will find that your actions become more graceful, your emotions more balanced, and your thoughts more clear. This is the essence of being a true witness.
So remember, in every moment, “I am consciousness,” and live from this understanding. This is the key to a life of bliss and freedom.
