The Tao is not hard to know. It is hard to follow.
The Tao – the fundamental essence of the universe, the flow of nature, the underlying current of existence. To know the Tao is to understand the principle of life’s effortless unfolding, the very structure of being. This understanding comes in silence, in meditation, not in the chattering of the mind. When you quiet the mind, you can listen to the whispers of the universe, you become receptive to the intrinsic harmony of existence. This is not hard; it is our natural state. It is simply a matter of peeling away the layers of conditioning that distract us from this awareness.
But to follow the Tao, now that is another matter entirely. We are conditioned beings, conditioned by society, by our desires, by our egos. To follow the Tao means to let go of these conditions. It means to act not out of personal desire but out of harmony with the universe. To follow the Tao, one must embody wu wei – action through non-action, effortlessness, allowing life to flow through you without resistance, without the imposition of the ego. It is hard because the ego clings, it fights, it wants to be heard, it wants to impose its will upon the world, whereas the Tao simply flows.
To follow the Tao, one must embark on a spiritual journey of letting go, of dissolving the ego, of surrendering to the flow of life. It is a constant practice, relinquishing the need for control, embracing the moment as it is, trusting the process of existence. This is no small feat. It is a transformative path that challenges the very core of our conditioned identities. It requires vigilance, awareness, and a compassionate heart.
Remember, to follow the Tao is not about striving; it is about being. Be like water – it does not struggle, yet it moves mountains. Be present, be patient, and move with the natural rhythm of life. The universe dances effortlessly – when you align with it, your life becomes a reflection of the Tao, easy and unforced. This is the art of living.
