Love has to be a river till it reaches the ocean. Love has to remain flowing till it reaches God.
When Osho speaks of love as a river, it is to evoke the imagery of a perpetual flow, a dynamic journey towards the vast, the ultimate, the infinite which can be symbolised as the ocean or God. Love in its essence cannot be static; it must be a living process. It is not a stagnant pool but a vibrant stream, continually moving, overcoming obstacles, meandering through the diverse terrains of life, growing broader and deeper as it advances.
The metaphor of a river reaching the ocean depicts the individual love evolving into universal love. It starts with personal attachments, the ‘I’ and ‘you’, and grows into a love that transcends the ego, dissolving into an ‘us’ that is expansive and embraces all of existence. True love leads to the dissolution of the individual into the collective, the drop becomes the ocean, and in the context of spirituality, the soul reunites with God, the ultimate source of all.
The journey of love towards God is one of transformation and transcendence. It begins with emotional love, laden with desires and expectations, and evolves into unconditional love, where desires pale and expectations wither away. This higher love seeks nothing, not even reciprocity, for it exists for the sake of love alone.
This journey is also one of surrender, for as the river trusts the pull of gravity to lead it to the sea, so too must one in love trust in the divine flow that pulls one’s spirit towards God. Along this journey, you will come to see that love is not just a feeling, but an alchemical force capable of transmuting the base human into the divine.
To remain flowing is to remain in a state of lovingness – not attached to a person or an object, but as a quality of your being. When you can retain this quality regardless of life’s circumstances, then you are truly in love, and then you will see that love has always been seeking its source, which is God. In this seeking and reuniting, through love, you come to know the true spiritual union.
Blessings upon your journey, may your river of love always flow, and may you find your ocean, your God, in this vast existence.
