The ego lives in the tension between what you are and what you want to be. A wants to be B – the ego is created out of this tension.
This quote beautifully captures the essence of the ego and its role in our lives. The ego, fueled by desires and aspirations, thrives on the disparity between our current state and our desired state. It gains energy from our yearning to be different – rich instead of poor, wise instead of ignorant, powerful instead of insignificant.
The ego’s existence is tied to this perpetual cycle of wanting more, always seeking to fill a void. It lives in the realm of past achievements and future ambitions, constantly reminding us of what we have done and what we want to do. In this space of comparison and expectation, the ego maintains its hold over our thoughts and actions.
However, the ego’s power diminishes when we embrace the present moment and accept ourselves as we are. By letting go of the need to constantly strive for something more, we weaken the grip of the ego. When we release the tension around future goals and past accomplishments, the ego fades away, unable to sustain itself in the present moment.
Ultimately, the death of the ego comes when we find contentment in our current state, free from the constant cycle of desire and comparison. By staying grounded in the present and surrendering to the flow of existence, we can transcend the ego and experience true freedom and inner peace.
