Having nothing, nothing can he lose.

The quote emphasises the value of non-attachment and the freedom that comes with it. In this context, the notion of not accumulating anything – whether it be power, money, prestige, virtue, knowledge, or even spiritual experiences – is paramount. The act of accumulation inherently breeds fear, as individuals become anxious about the potential loss of their possessions. Therefore, the key to living without fear is to refrain from accumulating.

Possessiveness is the root issue, not life itself. The more one possesses, the greater the fear of loss. By contrast, if you possess nothing, your spirit remains pure and uncontaminated. You can face death without trepidation because there is nothing to lose. When death arrives, it finds you ready, not as a loser but as someone open to new experiences.

When sages counsel against accumulation, they do so in an absolute sense. This guidance is not confined to material possessions; it also encompasses virtues, knowledge, and spiritual experiences. The act of accumulating, in any form, engenders fear. By opting to forgo accumulation, fear diminishes, fostering a state of fearlessness. Consequently, even death is perceived as a graceful transition rather than a feared conclusion.

A truly spiritual person experiences many profound moments but does not cling to them. Once these experiences occur, they are forgotten. Such an individual does not dwell on past experiences or wish for their recurrence. They do not pray for these experiences to happen again. Once they have occurred, they are complete, and the individual moves on, always open to new experiences and unburdened by the past.
