Be IN world, but don’t be OF world.
The dance of being and non-being, presence and absence. To be IN the world but not OF the world is to participate fully in the great drama of existence without getting entangled in its myriad illusions. This is a delicate art, the art of witnessing; you are to be a lotus flower – rooted in the mud, yet untouched by it.
To be IN the world means you are present in the moment, engaged in life’s activities, meeting each experience with openness and vitality. You have a role to play, and you play it with commitment, but you do so with a lightness of being, knowing that your true essence is not confined to any role or definition.
Not being OF the world signifies a detachment, an understanding that while you are part of this cosmic play, you are not limited to the identity, the form, or the personality you have temporarily assumed. You are aware that the material pursuits, the social structures, the very earth upon which we walk, are not the final truths of our existence. You may enjoy them, you may learn from them, but you remain unattached, you are not possessed by them.
This way, when success comes, you enjoy it, and when failure comes, you learn from it – but neither can sway you from your centre of being. This understanding can help you navigate through life with grace, allowing you to remain centred amidst the chaos, and peaceful within the storm. Embrace the world, but do not let it contain your spirit. That is the essence of being IN the world, but not OF it.
