When your ego is no more, only then will you know who you are.
The ego can be understood as the image you have of yourself that you constantly and protect. It is composed of the many identifications you carry – your name, your body, your possessions, your titles and all the labels society gives you. The ego thrives on separation, it depends on comparing, it lives on boundaries – ‘I am this, you are that; I am good, you are bad; I am rich, you are poor.’ It is always judging, and through judgement, it keeps itself alive.
When Osho says “When your ego is no more, only then will you know who you are,” he is speaking of a transcendental state of consciousness. In this space, there is no need to compare or maintain any image. It is a state of pure being.
The ego is a chronic obstruction to the discovery of the self. It is through the dissolution of the ego that you come to experience the essence, the true self that lies beyond it – an entity that does not change with time or with the judgements of the ego. This true self is connected with existence, and it is here that one realises that at the deepest level, all is one.
To know who you truly are, you must therefore go through a transformation where the ego is no longer the master, but simply a functional mechanism that serves, rather than dictates. This requires meditation, awareness, and a continuous effort to witness the ego rather than being lost in it.
In meditation, you watch thoughts, feelings, and emotions as they pass, and in that watching, you become aware that you are not these things. The ego dissolves in this awareness. What remains is your true nature, which is pure consciousness, bliss, and peace. This is a space of deep understanding and love, and it is only from here that you can truly know yourself.
