1. Why Ice float on the water? The maximum density of water occurs at 4 °C because, at this temperature two opposing effects are in balance.

2. When water is heated from 0 degree to 4 degree Celsius, the water contracts. Why?Density of water between 0 and 4 Celsius is influenced by two key opposing forces caused due to Thermal kinetic expansion and H-bonding.
Thermal kinetic expansion force is simply the force that causes molecules to move around more when the there is a rise in temperature. Because of this higher thermal forces the molecules moves apart and so become less dense.
Hydrogen bonding force can be simply explained as the force of attraction between the hydrogen attached to an electronegative atom of one molecule and an electronegative atom of a different molecule.
