Lotus:
If you were to look at the lotus leaf under a microscope you would see what appears to be the tiny bed of nails these nails prevent water droplets. So when water drops that fall onto them bead up and roll off. These leaves not only stay dry, but the droplets pick up small particles of dirt as they roll, so that the lotus leaves are even self-cleaning.
For us:
The lotus flower can also characterize devotees levels of faith within themselves. In our chaotic human lives (represented by the muddy roots of the lotus) bombarded with troubles and hardships we seek to be free of pain and suffering. In the same way a lotus finds its way out of its muddy roots to bloom and break free from surrounding burdens holding it down. Thus not only does a lotus represent purity, growth, freedom and birth. It also represents faith.
